The Mission

Salt & Light Cottage Bakery is a home-based micro bakery run by Olivia Ramos and supported by her husband, Hector Ramos. The Ramoses met, got married, and lived in the South Baltimore neighborhood of Brooklyn, where Salt & Light was born.

Hear from the owner herself:

"Salt & Light was born out of a need that Hector and I had to fundraise for our missions trips back in the summer of 2024. It started with 20 Valentine's Day baskets- over 400 assorted cookies and treats. We raised over $5000 between the baskets and the sourdough bread that I began selling. Not only were we able to fund our own trips, but we were also able to sponsor our friends to attend as well. As my interest in baking grew and the need for fundraising continued, Salt & Light expanded to the cottage bakery it is now."

Salt & Light Cottage Bakery is a for-profit ministry that supports Olivia and Hector in their local and international ministries by paying for bills, covering mission trip expenses and supplementing income. What makes Salt & Light unique is that a portion of the profits also goes towards sponsoring other missionaries in the vital work that they do for God's Kingdom.

The Mission Statement

The name comes from Jesus' famous Sermon on the Mount found in Matthew 5. Verses 13-16 read:

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden... In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven”.

At Salt & Light Cottage Bakery, we believe great baking, and well-seasoned faith, both need a little salt and light to shine. Salt is a vital ingredient—it adds depth and enhances the flavor of anything it touches, even sweet things. It’s especially crucial in sourdough bread, one of my favorite things to bake! Without salt, the bread would lack flavor and the dough would lose structure, resulting in something flat and underdeveloped.

Light is also essential! It transforms raw dough into fresh, baked goodness. The right amount of light and heat—whether from an oven or open flame—is what brings cookies, breads, and pastries to life.

Just like baked goods need both salt and light to be complete, our faith needs seasoning and illumination to reflect God's design. Without the proper seasoning of faith and the light of Christ shining through us, our ability to impact the world lacks the flavor, complexity, structure, and fullness that God intends.

When we allow our divine Creator—God the Father—to season, stretch, and refine us through life’s fires, we begin to shine the light of His Son, Jesus, into the world. And through that, He is glorified.
